“Little Archaeo-Oriental Studies”

Until 2023, three editions of the competition for research projects in Archeooriental Studies were announced; two more editions are planned for 2024-25.

The aim of the competition is to support research projects at the intersection of oriental studies and archaeology. The main subject of research in the project is the relationship between broadly-understood power (political, religious, etc.) and space (e.g., the organisation of a place, the setting of boundaries, constructing social space).
We welcome research teams in which at least one person represents archaeology and at least one person is involved in research on Asian or African cultures. Oriental-archaeological partnership is a prerequisite; projects that do not contain information about archaeological-oriental collaboration will not be considered. We encourage you to consult the coordinator of the action before submitting your application.

Projects selected in previous editions:

  1. Symbolism of the gates of Cairo (pilot studies) – Dr Magdalena Pinker, Prof. Katarzyna Pachniak (Faculty of Oriental Studies, UW) and Dr. Mariusz Drzewiecki (PCMA UW);
  2. Buddhist meditation caves in the Chhoser region, Upper Mustang, Nepal – Dr. Ewa Paśnik-Tułowiecka (Faculty of Oriental Studies, UW) and Dr. Marta Żuchowska (Faculty of Archaeology, UW);
